SACRAMENTO, California — The Senate race in one of the biggest and bluest states was billed as a generational clash that pitted against each other nationally known Democrats with differing genders, ideologies and regional bases.
In the end, Donald Trump trumped it all.
Rep. Adam Schiff, known for his prominent role in the opposition against former President Trump, has gained a significant advantage in the upcoming primary election in California. By consistently bringing Trump into the spotlight during the campaign, Schiff has positioned himself as a frontrunner alongside Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, and Republican Steve Garvey.
Schiff's confrontation with Trump, including being censured by Trump allies and criticized directly by the former president, has elevated his profile and galvanized support among Democrats. Even a recent derogatory post by Trump on Truth Social only served to reignite the rivalry between them, further boosting Schiff's visibility.
Now leading the race, Schiff has strategically leveraged Trump's polarizing politics to bolster his own candidacy while simultaneously undermining his opponents, notably promoting Garvey as a preferred alternative to divide the Republican vote.
"Trump's presence has cast a long shadow over this Senate race," observed Mike Madrid, a Republican strategist opposed to Trump. "His attacks on Schiff essentially determined the Democratic frontrunner, making Schiff the face of anti-Trump sentiment. This dynamic has significantly shaped the contours of the primary contest."
